Before heading to the national debate Saturday night, fromer Senator Rick Santorum made a stop in Summerville as part of congressman Tim Scott's First in the South Presidential Town Hall Series.
“Our message is tailor made for this state,” Rick Santorum said. “This will be a white-hot state for us when we get here.”
Senator Santorum is the fifth candidate to participate in the series, which brings 2012 Republican presidential candidates to South Carolina for discussions with grassroots voters. Previous town halls have been held in Charleston, Berkeley, and Horry counties.
During a question and answer session with the audience Saturday, Santorum blamed both George W. Bush and Barack Obama for not working harder against Iran. He said he would work together with Israel against Iran if it develops nuclear capability.
“People have to know where America is and what America will do,” he said. “It will rally our allies around us and it will create respect and in some cases fear for those who seek to cross America.”
The issue he said is most important is the economy and he suggests a plan to get it humming again…
“Go to five deductions in the tax code: charities, children, housing, pensions and healthcare. That's it, everything else is gone,” Santorum said. “Then we do one other thing, it's important to South Carolina, and that is we focus on the manufacturing section of the economy.”

Please take a moment to hear the words from the Former Governor about Rick Santorum!
Rick Santorum speaks with Governor Edwards at HQ Grand Opening in Charleston
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- It was a wild week in the race for the Republican nomination, from Herman Cain's dealings with sexual assault allegations, to Governor Rick Perry's brain freeze on the debate stage.
Saturday night, the eight Republican presidential candidates squared off in yet another debate, this one held at Wofford College in Spartanburg. It marked the 10th debate for the candidates. The debate's focus was on foreign policy.
Campaigning in the Lowcountry Saturday was Senator Rick Santorum who says he looks forward to debating the issue of national security.
"My prediction is that by this time next year the number one issues heading into the election are going to be just as much national security as it is the economy," said Republican Presidential candidate, Rick Santorum.
According to recent polls, Santorum is at the back of the Republican pack, but he'll be the first to tell you not to count him out.
"There are a lot of folks who answer polls for the flavor of the month, who the media is talking about. Well they haven't been talking much about me," said Santorum.
"We're going to surprise a lot of people. I don't anticipate us being ahead in any poll leading into the Iowa caucus, but I suspect a big surprise on caucus night."
Santorum has officially opened his state headquarters office, located in Mount Pleasant on Johnnie Dodd's Boulevard. It's the first time a presidential candidate has picked the Lowcountry for their state headquarters.
"I think we're making progress when people want to come here to Mount Pleasant for their state headquarters, for the center of their activity and the direction they want to go in. I think it's very flattering for the Lowcountry," said former South Carolina Governor, James Edwards.
"Normally, the Lowcountry has been ignored by presidential candidates," said Linn Bennett, Chairman of the Charleston County Republican Party. "But in the last couple years the Lowcountry has had an impact."
Impact is exactly what Santorum hopes to have in the Holy City.
"I focused my effort on an area that is very important to South Carolina," Santorum said. "I'm someone who has been a consistent, strong, passionate conservative at a time when it wasn't popular to be so."
Santorum says his family has vacationed in the area for 20 years, and visiting the new office feels like coming home.

Senator Santorum said: “The economy is inextricably linked to the moral fabric of this country. And we can’t have a real solution-based conversation about fixing the economic problems in this country without faith and family being a large part of that conversation.
It’s wrong for anyone to try and reduce the idea of America solely to economy – because the spirit of America is much more than money – it’s faith, family and freedom. The strength of the traditional family, the moral fabric of our nation, and basic value of human life greatly impact our economy. In fact, the family is the first economy, and without strong families we cannot have limited government, nor can we have a vibrant free market economy. Our Founders understood this basic fact, which is why the explicitly declared that our Rights come to each and every individual from God and not to a King to be spread around. Our Founders trusted in free people to make good and moral choices, and we must do that again today if we hope to remain a free and vibrant society.”
Hogan Gidley, National Communications Director, said: “The next president must have the trust of the American people and must possess experience, knowledge, and ability to lead this nation forward. A President Santorum will be able to successfully address all major issues that confront this nation – the economic, the national security and the moral, cultural issues. The press would have you believe that the only issue is the economy – and yes, the economy is certainly a pressing issue – however, to have debates with no questions about the threat of a nuclear Iran and no questions about preserving the traditional American family is a disservice to American people. I will remind folks that in 2008, only one candidate – Tommy Thompson – received the lone health care related question in the presidential debates, and now, healthcare is the cornerstone issue of this election season. We must have a president ready to deal with all issues that come across his desk, and Rick Santorum is the one candidate prepared to do just that.”

Rick Santorum Faith, Freedom and Families
Senator Rick Santorum - Champion of Faith & Families

As a husband and father, Rick Santorum knows the importance of protecting and providing for your family. He believes that at the core of the American experience is the family, and that without strong families, we cannot have a strong and vibrant nation.
During his time in elected office, Rick Santorum fought for the preservation of the traditional American family and for the protection of the most vulnerable in our society. Rick was the author of legislation outlawing the heinous act known as partial-birth abortion and he championed the fight to pass the “Born Alive Infant Protection Act” and the “Unborn Victims of Violence Act.” He also authored legislation to advance adult stem cell research, so that ethical research could take place to fight debilitating diseases without the moral implications associated with embryonic stem cell research that destroys human life.
Rick Santorum not only believes but cherishes the ideal of a culture of life. As a member of the United States Senate, Rick fought for the passage of the Individuals with Disability Education Act (IDEA), and the “Combating Autism Act” to fight this devastating disease that is affecting more and more of our nation’s children.
When activist judges took it upon themselves to redefine marriage, and with it the underpinnings of the traditional American family and our First Amendment right to Freedom of Religion, Rick spearheaded the debate in favor of Federal Marriage Amendment in 2004. Rick successfully fought even members of his own Party and had the amendment brought to the Senate floor for public debate in two successive Congresses. Even though he knew he would be labeled a bigot or worse by members of the liberal elite, Rick Santorum understood this issue was far too important to the future of our society not to be debated before the American public.
Rick understands that our freedom to practice our faith is not just under attack through the redefinition of marriage, but in nearly every facet of the popular culture. As a member of the United States Senate, Rick authored the “Workplace Religious Freedom Act” to ensure individuals of all faith could not be discriminated against while on the job. Rick also founded the Congressional Working Group on Religious Freedom to ensure that the principle of Freedom of Religion would not be infringed upon.
Since leaving the Senate in 2007, Rick has spent much of his time advancing these same principles in the private and non-profit sector. Rick has helped raise funds to support organizations like the Susan B. Anthony List, Americans United for Life, and the National Organization for Marriage. But of all his jobs, Rick is most proud of his time spent as a husband to his wife Karen and a father to their seven children – including serving as the Little League coach for their two youngest sons.

Rick Santorum Stands for National Secuirty

Senator Rick Santorum Believer in American Exceptionalism
Rick Santorum understands that the events of September 11, 2001 brought to our front door the uncomfortable truth that attacks on our soil are not merely a distant possibility, but a harsh reality.
To combat this threat, Rick refused to back down from those who wish to destroy America. Rick Santorum understands that those who wish to destroy America do so because they hate everything we are – a land of freedom, a land of prosperity, a land of equality. Rick knows that backing down to the Jihadists means that we are only putting our foundational principles at greater risk. As an elected representative, Rick knew that his greatest responsibility was to protect the freedoms we enjoy – and we should not apologize for holding true to these principles.
That is why Rick refuses to call this a War on Terror, because, like Blitzkrieg, terror is a tactic. Rick believes our nation’s leaders must be honest with the American people and call this war what it is, a War with Radical Islam. Rick saw firsthand during the Bush Administration that without clearly defining who we are fighting and why we are fighting, the American people will never understand the great threat posed by our enemies.
Rick did not simply use his position in the United States Senate to fight rhetorical battles, he used every legislative tool at his disposal to combat rogue regimes that wish our nation harm. Rick spent 8 years on the Senate Armed Services Committee, where he fought to strengthen America’s military in the face of the Clinton Administration’s attempt to downsize our fighting capabilities.
In 2003, Rick authored and successfully fought for the passage of the “Syria Accountability Act” to combat the terrorist threat posed by Syria. By 2005, Rick was one of our nation’s first leaders to understand the threat posed by Iran, so he authored and passed the “Iran Freedom and Support Act” in the face Democratic and Bush State Department opposition, which authorized Federal monies to support pro-democracy movements in Iran and keep the tyrannical dictator Mahmoud Ahmadinejad from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
Though the war in Iraq was unpopular in 2006, Rick refused to shy away from his belief that we need to confront our enemies. Though ridiculed by many in the mainstream media as a chicken little for talking about the threat posed by Ahmadinejad and Iran, Rick spent much of his campaign focused on the gathering storm that our enemies pose. In an election that was a referendum on the war, Rick was defeated.
Though he lost at the ballot box, Rick has not stopped fighting for the defense our nation. Since leaving the Senate in 2007, Rick created the “Program to Protect America’s Freedom” at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, where he worked to identify, study, and heighten awareness of the threats posed to America. Through his work, Rick spoke at dozens of university campuses and to thousands of college students about the threats to our nation and how it is critical that the next generation of leaders not back down, but defend our nation.

Rick Santorum slugs it out for the taxpayer
Senator Rick Santorum Defender of the Taxpayer

From the moment he was elected to public office, Rick Santorum worked tirelessly to ensure the hard-earned tax dollars of all Americans were being spent wisely.
Along with John Boehner and Jim Nussle, Rick was a member of the “Gang of Seven” who targeted the waste and fraud of the House Post Office and Bank. This did not make Rick Santorum a popular man in an old boy’s club like the House of Representatives, but Rick knew that the only way to make a positive difference in the lives of his constituents was to challenge the corrupt norms that had seeped into the People’s Body.
Being elected to the upper-chamber of the United States Senate did not slow down Rick’s passion for government reform. Two of the first bills Rick sponsored were the “Balanced Budget Amendment” and the “Line Item Veto,” because Rick knew the importance of reigning in a government drunk on spending.
Rick Santorum knew that reforming Congress was a great start, but our nation’s entitlement programs were the cancer to the long-term fiscal health of our nation. This is why he was one of the lead sponsors of the landmark 1996 Welfare Reform law that has helped more Americans transition from the government welfare rolls to work than any legislation before or since.
In 2005, seeing our Social Security system on the brink of bankruptcy, Rick led the charge to reform the broken entitlement system. Along with South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint, Rick was one of only a handful of legislators who stuck their head out of the foxhole and fought to save the Social Security system for future generations by offering creative reforms focused on empowering the individual.
Rick also fought to ensure that all Americans kept more of their hard-earned tax dollars. He spearheaded the passage of President Bush’s tax cuts in 2001 and 2003, because he believes that reducing the tax burden on businesses and individuals is the key to spurring economic growth.
Since leaving Congress, Rick has been a vocal opponent of the Wall Street bailouts and stimulus programs instituted by both President Bush and Obama. Rick believes that by having our government choose winners and losers, both Administrations are setting America on a course to crony western European capitalism that will lead to a weaker future for our children.
Rick was rewarded for his hard work on behalf of the American taxpayer, consistently being named as a “Friend of the Taxpayer” by the National Taxpayers Union and endorsed by pro-business organizations like the National Federation of Independent Business and the United States Chamber of Commerce during his political campaigns.

Rick Santorum swings for the fences on Education
Senator Rick Santorum Fostering Future Generations

As a husband and father, Rick Santorum knows that at the heart of the American educational experience is the family; after all, every parent is a teacher, a child’s best teacher. Rick Santorum believes the best way to reduce government control over the educational system is to put the power back in the hands of the family.
Rick Santorum and his wife Karen understand the difficulty of educating children firsthand. As the parents of seven children, the Santorums know that the educational needs of each of their children is different. This is why Rick is a full-throated supporter of educational choice options for parents, and was a leader in the fight for school choice—including homeschooling options, charter school expansion, and voucher programs. Rick believes that in America, parents should not have to be forced to send their children to either failing schools or schools that do not meet the needs and wants of their families.
Not only have the Santorums been vocal supporters of educational choice, but they have also walked the walk in their own family. Each of the Santorum children has been homeschooled, with both Rick and Karen taking the responsibility of providing both a rigorous and nurturing educational environment for their children. Unlike many who support the education establishment but use their own resources to send their children to private schools, the Santorums believe that educational choice should be available to all American families, aligned with each family’s individual needs and wishes. Every family is different and no child, regardless of income or geographic location, should be confined to anything less than an excellent school or have limited opportunities—not in the information age. And not in America.
Rick Santorum not only believes in but cherishes the ideals of educational excellence based on opportunity, safety, and each family’s values. As a member of the United States Senate, Rick has supported the DC Opportunity Scholarship program, providing less fortunate families the options to send their children to their school of choice; worked to create Kids Accounts, so our children could better afford a college education; and helped author the Schools SAFE Act which helps ensure that adults working with children have criminal- and abuse-free records.

SENATOR RICK SANTORUM DEFENDING 2ND AMENDMENT RIGHTS

“HE [RICK SANTORUM] WAS THE MOST EFFECTIVE ADVOCATE OF BRINGING IT [LEGISLATION TO PROTECT GUN COMPANIES FROM FRIVOLOUS LAWSUITS] TO THE FLOOR AND GETTING A VOTE SCHEDULED. HE USED HIS INFLUENCE TO GET IT TO THE FLOOR. WITHOUT THAT, WE WOULD HAVE LOST EVERY AMERICAN GUN COMPANY.”
– WAYNE LAPIERRE, CEO – NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION, OCTOBER 25, 2006
“ON BEHALF OF NRA MEMBERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY, I WANT TO THANK SENATOR RICK SANTORUM FOR HIS SUPPORT OF THE HUNTERS AND FISHERMEN, AND HIS WORK TO PRESERVE OUR COUNTRY’S STRONG OUTDOOR TRADITIONS.”
– CHRIS COX, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR – NRA-ILA, FEBRUARY 7, 2006
Coming from Pennsylvania, a state with a rich heritage of hunting and fishing, Senator Santorum understands firsthand the importance of preserving our constitutionally protected rights found in the 2nd Amendment. Senator Santorum fights to preserve this tradition, and will work to ensure these rights are not infringed upon.
As a Senator, Rick Santorum opposed frivolous lawsuits against the gun industry by supporting legislation (The Protection of Lawful Commerce Act) that would protect law abiding firearms manufacturers and dealers from frivolous lawsuits attempting to hold them liable for criminal acts of third parties.
Rick Santorum vehemently opposed the Assault Weapons Ban because he believes that there are more effective ways to stop gun violence, such as stricter enforcement of existing laws, than taking away the rights of law abiding gun owners.
Senator Santorum was also the proud author of legislation to eliminate the requirement that all hunters and fishermen furnish their social security numbers when getting a license. It was estimated that this legislation would help save 16 million hunters and another 24 million fishermen who buy their licenses every year from falling victim to identity theft.
For his work on behalf of gun owners and sportsmen across the country, Senator Santorum consistently received the highest possible ratings from the National Rifle Association and gun owners groups from around the country.
